Hi ladies ... its been quite sometime since I was last on here.

I am still a keen runner both outdoors and on the TM but am also trying to conceive so my question to you is "is it ok to continue running whilst pregnant"?

In January of this year I miscarried at 3 months and continued with my same exercise routine during my 3 months of pregnancy and although my doctor has assured me that the miscarriage was not due to exercise, I still feel a little anxious but must admit exercise is also a high priority.

My doctor has advised me not to continue running if I become pregnant.  He said this is not because of possible miscarriage as it takes more than running to dislodge a pregnancy but did say that the joints become softer and this could therefore cause problems.

Has anyone on this site continued with their running during pregnancy?

Hi Suze, welcome back, glad to hear you are still running.

Ok, my own experience was that I gave up running as soon as I found out I was pregnant.  I knew I didn't need to, if you google running in pregnancy you will find lots of info.  As far as I am aware running for the first trimester is fine, providing you feel up to it morning sickness and tiredness wise.  The second trimester is ok too if you take things really easy and listen to your body, but as you get bigger it depends on what is comfortable for you.  The last trimester I don't think is wise, but really depends on you, your body, what your GP and MW say and how you feel.  I know I certainly couldn't have run past 5 months, but that is just me.

And.................. after all that yes I did not run atall after I found out, even though common sense and research told me it was ok, good even in the early months, I was too worried about things going wrong! lol

I did walk a lot instead, and of course baby was healthy.  But an interesting point, I was fit before pg, and fit during, but I still suffered from pre eclampsia and delivered early.  So no matter how careful you are, or are not, things sometimes just happen.

Take care and good luck TTC.  I can only advise to take your GP and MWs advice on this.

x

to tell you my story -

i already had 2 half marathons booked when i got up the duff. i ran one at 13 weeks and one the weekend after. everything was fine. i did check with the doctor to be sure - and he actively encouraged me to sign up for another half marathon that ran when i was 11 weeks (i didn't do it!)/

i kept running until i was 20 weeks - ish. the only reason i stopeed is because it was december and we did a five mile x country in the snow and i just didn't enjoy it. i was cold, miserable and covered in mud and i just thought, i have an excuse to stop this madness! i think if i was 5 months in spring time i would have kept going. the running was fine - it was the weather...

there is a thread on runnersworld entorely for ladies who are preggers who are all still keen to do what running they can. i would say it is worth a mooch just to get lots of different experiences.

Hi, I've just found this board, I'm Sarah and 8w 4d pg. I've been running since June and did my 1st 10k at 6+3. It was great fun :) Since then I've not done any running, partly because I've been so tired and feeling nauseous and partly because it's been so dark on an evening. I could run during the day when DS and DD are at school but my running friend works and can only go at 5.30.
Over the last week I've not felt sick (yey!) and have quite fancied a run, though am a bit nervous going alone, and also a bit nervous of doing harm to bean.
So I'm undecided! If it was summer I think I'd definitely be running still.
I'm looking at the Davina pregnancy dvd on Ebay, might try that...

Sarah
