I cant believe it - I only have suddenly developed asthma!

Had to go into hospital the other night as I couldnt breathe - apparantly a chest infection from this cold I have had - went and saw drs this morning who were concerened as its still bad and say its likely the chest infection has brought on the asthma - apparantly I cant run for a while - to say I am gutted is an understatement, already had a week off. Suprised me though as when I run, I never get out of breath or anything, usually its my legs that stop me first!

Now I had asthma when I was 4 so obviously too young to really know about it but wondering if anyone else has asthma now and still does lots of exercise? (I run about 40 miles a week usually) The dr just said I couldnt run - I am hoping she means just while I have been bad this week and part of next? Am going to see her next monday so will try for a better chat then.

One of those years!

xx Han

OMG! What a shock that must have been, poor you. How are you feeling now?

My DH has asthma and does quite a bot of exercise, and he does go jogging, nowhere near 40 miles a week but he does do it, and it's all up and down hill here. He goes to the asthma clinic every few months but there are never any problems really. He does take his inhalers out with him but has said he actually feels loads better for doing it.

Hope you get some positive news when you go back next week.

Hi Sam

Thanks, thats hopeful news to hear your DH also runs. A friend who does lots of work with sports injuries mainly was saying that there isnt any reason that I shouldnt run so will have a chat with him next week. My last run was a fast 10k last Saturday where I was fine during and afterwards so fingers crossed its just the chest infection making everything worse.

Will update next week - I cant believe its now a whole week since I last ran!

Hi Han,

I am sorry to hear you have not been well.

I was diagnosed with asthma at age 20 (almost exactly 11 years ago now), so I know it can come as quite a shock. Unlike you however, I have never been very active & therefore my lack of fitness has probably prolonged my asthma (one thing I am hoping for with getting in shape is that it will improve if not disappear completely eventually).

I see no reason why, if you have been prescribed the right medication and take it as advised, you can't continue with your normal fitness routine. I would imagine that if you get out of the habit of running, it can only make your general health worse than it was before you got the chest infection. Obviously I would suggest you speak to your GP and I am only trying to give you some encouragement at a confusing time, but hopefully you will have nothing too much to worry about.

All the best

K-K

Aiming to get fit for my holiday 27th January '10... size 16 would be awesome too!

Whether you think you can or think you can't... you're right!!
