Hi all

I am a vegetarian and have been for 25 years, over the last 5-6 years I have very much wanted to become a vegan but thought I might miss cheese and eggs too much.  However, I have decided to give veganism a go as from next week for the week and see if I get on ok, if so then I will adopt this permanently.  Just wondered if anyone has any tips for me.  I'm also following slimming world and not sure how veganism and slimming world work together if at all.  I won't have soya milk (as I have thyroid problems) but like rice milk.

A couple of questions I thought of were if I was able to cook with rice milk and soya yoghurt (the plain stuff?). I love cooking so will make loads of stuff myself.

Also whats the main view of organic honey? As I know a lot vegans don't eat honey at all.  But it also has a lot of health beneficial properties?

Thanks for your time

mistressk

hi smillie!

I have been a vegan for 16 years (and just had my first baby)

you can cook as normal with any of the milk/cream substitutes (oat/almond/rice or soya). i assume same as with yoghurt but i only had it once and it tasted too much like yoghurt for my liking!

the vegan cheeses aren't really low on fat (same as normal cheese). i only buy the cream cheese subst for sandwiches/cooking and the redwood super melting mozzarella for cooking lasagne/enchiladas etc as i don't like the taste of cheese (vegan or dairy).

i buy vegan sausages and redwood beef style strips as well as nut cutlets/spicy bean burgers but mainly cook from scratch. here are most of my normal dishes:

lasagne; sausage and bean cassoulet, sausage hash, 5 bean chilli, fajitas, enchiladas, tortilla pie, stuffed mushrooms, stuffed peppers, ratatouille, curry, risotto.

as you see, not much different to a veggie diet.

i do buy 1 jar of organic honey a year to use medicinally only

K

Message: Thank you thats been very helpful.  I was thinking to limit the cheese I have in anycase as I am worried if I get the taste of cheese I might not be able to stop and rush out to the shops to gorge on a block of cheddar LOL!! So was thinking along the same lines as you - having the melting Redwood stuff for cooking and I will get some of the cream cheese for sandwiches/bagels etc.

Hi I'm not vegan myself, not yet anyway, but recently decided to go veggie.  I have a question for you..... I also have an underactive thyroid  and have been drinking soya milk for years now. Is there a problem with soya milk if you have this condition?  Also doing SW so curious to here how veganism and SW go together

Linda
