Message: I have been thinking of scrapbooking for a few years and have decided it's what I really should be doing. But we're hard up financially so I don't want to be spending money on this hobby. The albums I've been seeing online are quite expensive so I thought maybe someone could give me ideas on how to make one from scratch? Are there any rules to album presentation?

Hi there,

The only "rule" with scrapping is that there are NO rules! Your scrapbooks are totally personal to you - and that means whatever you want to do is right!

There are sites where you can download backing papers for free - this is a good one: http://www.scrapbookscrapbook.com/ - for others just search free scrapbook.

Then how you make up your album is totally up to you! You could use an A4 binder and some poly pockets and just slide your pages in. They are really cheap.

Or you could make your pages and bind them with a card cover (or even fabric covered card!) by hole punching it all and tying it together with ribbon or raffia etc.

Scrapping is like all paper based hobbies - they can be cheap as chips - but companies got in on the act and made a whole heap of expensive stuff that they tell us we can't do without... But we can!!

Happy scrapping!

Message: Hi tartymuffin and thanks for the reply. I've decided I'll buy individual A4 cardboard pages in different colours and textures to suit the particular page, that way I can buy a few at a time. Though the papers are still costly, at around EUR0.23 each for the patterned ones :-S But then again, if I can buy a little at a time it won't see as so much. I would opt for an A4 binder but again, over here they're way expensive unless they're the plain ugly kind and those are usually either plastic-covered or else cardboard but too ugly to make better by decorating, lol. So I guess for now I'll just buy the pages and put them in a file I have already and then in time I'll buy one of the binders or figure out a way of making a cheap ugly one nice.
