Hi All,

I am currently on Depo Provera since early 2007 but in the past 6 months, my moods swings have been extreme and I just can't bear it any longer.

I was previously on Microgynon but because I was on that from age 13 due to heavy periods/pain until I was 18 when I came off the Pill with the intention of going over to Depo and had a break in between to let my periods return to normal. I noticed that I felt relieved when off any contraception but then I started on the jab and all periods and PMS symptoms ceased which was fab!

Over the past 2.5 years though I have found that I needed to reduce the 12 week intervals to 11.5 then 11 and now I am onto 10 weeks just to prevent the moo swings that kick in preceding my jab.

This time around though at 7.5 weeks, I was a wreck and have been completely irrational constantly which is getting me down so much. I have a fabulous partner who is such a support and never mentions what might be causing it but I can feel how unreasonable I am being with him and it just isn't fair on either of us now.

Soooooo....

I have been reading up on what else I can have/take and I am a bit clueless!!

I have read some scary mentions of heavy bleeding and mood swings using the implant and then others who swear by it.

Does anyone have any advice for me? I am really rather baffled!

I have my Depo appt next week which I am about to change to a chat about my options and not have the jab next week. I haven't had a period in two years so I am a bit fearful of having to deal with that again too - wimpy I know!

Thanks in advance xx

I think if the depo isn't suiting you, the implant wont either...... they work in roughly the same way..... Have you considered the Mirena coil??...... it has a little bit of hormone in it which reduces or stops periods, but doesnt act in the whole body so you dont get the mood swings that you do with the depo/implant..... why not ask when you visit your GP.

hi sorry i know its a bit late but saw ur post and had to reply. did u go and get the implant or what did u decide? i am currently on implanon implant i think thats the only one they use and im on my 2nd one. my advice to you truthfully would be dont bother, with my first implant i bled for months and after a year i had it out due to headaches hot flushes and constant btb. it was hell anyway after that i went on the pill for a bit.

i had a baby in december 08 and decided to give the implant another go, for the first 3 months i had no bleeding at all it was great i dont know if it was the implant or the fact i was breast feeding but after that third month my periods returned and didnt stop i have been getting them sometimes 3 times a month and then i miss one have one miss one its making my life hell as i keep thinkin im pregnant. it itches where the impant was put in  also this time i have been having mood swings headaches again and im now getting a fair bit of breast pain i also had a breast cancer scare and the consultant said it was fibroid tissue caused by the hormon change. its not as good for all as they claim it to be i have found it a total nightmare the only reason im perservering is because i already have 3 children and really dont want anymore atm i have found that not much contraception suits me i forget the pill and still bleed even on the mini pill i have btb i think it may be down to my endometriosis. on the upside its great not having to worry about it and know its there. i havent got to remember anythingn anyway enough about me everyone is different hun and u could find it wonderful but personally i dont like it and i wouldnt advise u try it just to have 10 month of problems like i have. good luck let me know how ur getting on
