Hi
I'm new to these boards and am looking for some advice or explanation. My mother (63 years old) was diagnosed with a cancerous tumour in her breast. Yesterday she went in for surgery and they removed the tumour. They also tested a lymph node for cancer and found it was cancerous - they then removed all the nodes from under her arm. Now the doctor is saying that she will need chemotherapy as the cancer could spread through the lymph nodes into the bloodstream and infect other parts of the body. What I can't get the doctor to explain is how serious it is. The potential for the cancer to have spread through her whole body via the bloodstream sounds serious to me. Is it? Can chemo get rid of it? Does it mean that she now has cancer elsewhere? Is this life-threatening?

I am so anxious at the moment. I know you can't really evaluate my case as you don't know all the medical details but if someone could just try to explain what all this means I would really appreciate it. I am of an era which believes that Cancer is a death sentence. I know this has changed nowadays and that many many people conquer cancer now. I just don't know how serious this particular form is.

Thank you
J
