Message: Hi there. I am looking for a bit of advice from someone who may have been in a similar situation. My husband is 24, white, medium build and generally in good physical health. Last week he went to the doctor with a swollen and painful right testicle, which is also giving him shooting pains. The doctor could not see anything obvious, and said he ought to go for an ultrasound scan. This testicle was undescended when he was born, which I realise raises the risk of testiculat cancer. From what I have read online, it doesn't seem to be anything straightforward. It has been 6 days of pain for him now. Anyway, the doctor said about the ultrasound scan on Thursday 13/08/09, and he still hasn't heard when this will be. Can anyone advise if this involves a long wait? My husband was so upset he forgot to ask so many questions. I would appreciate any comments and advice from anyone. Many thanks for reading, Kakerlak.

HI there K

Can't advise about the wait I'm afraid as I really don't know if there is a standard waiting time and different health authorities probably vary anyway.

What I can do is put your mind at rest to an extent about the risk of testicular cancer. There are lots of reasons for this sort of pain and swelling. It might be an hydrocele, the tube could be twisted, he might have been hit without realising it..... The best thing your husband could do at the moment is to contact the GP again. He should be able to ask to speak over the phone - a return call at a fixed time so it is like an appointment. Then he could ask about the expected time delay before the ultrasound and ask whether the GP has any clear idea of the problem. The GP will understand, it is common for patients to leave after news like this without taking all information in.
