Message: I've had a whistling sound in my ear for the last week or so and it's starting to worry me, not to mention seriously get on my nerves. It's not very loud but it keeps me awake at night so it takes me hours to get to sleep. I'm recovering from pleurisy and a cold, so do people think it's just part of my general illness? Help I'm getting a bit paranoid about it now!

Message: Hi

Welcome to the board, have you been doing anything unusual or got water in your ears or listened to load music.

If it does not clear up soon it would be a good idea to see your doctor.

I also found this information that may be of interest to you http://hcd2.bupa.co.uk/fact_sheets/Mosby_factsheets/Tinnitus.html

You could have an infection of some sort or if it is Tinnitus it could be brought on by the stress of your illness

Do come back if you have any questions

Sarah

Message: Thanks for this it was really helpful :). The whistling sound is still there but sometimes it goes away for a day or so. It's so annoying though. I think it may be being made worse by the fact that I'm a musician, and also exposed to loads of noise at school :(.

Message: Hi

I think there would be no harm in having your ears checked out to rule out damage, wax build up infection. Ear problems is not something I know much about so can not help a huge amount but do feel it is worth getting checked

Message: Useful tip for tinnitus if it is making it hard to sleep.

Switch a radio to AM, have it just off station so it hisses. This 'white noise' in the background can reduce the effect of tinnitus. My Mum uses a white noise tape for hers and it is very helpful.

She has it because she was a prem baby and apparently it is common in adults who were small at birth as well as those exposed to a lot of noise in their work place/ home
