Hi all,

I am after some advice.  2 and a half yeas ago I moved into a house with my mum. The house has a lot of windows and so when a window cleaning company came knocking I signed up (didnt actually sign anything, but you know what I mean!) 3 months ago I moved out of the house, and mum was concerned about affording the window cleaners on her own pension alone, so I sent of a cheque to the company together with a letter saying I was moving out and so no longer needed my windows cleaning, this was all hand delivered and they have cashed the cheque. But they have been twice since and cleaned the windows and are now expecting us to pay them! They never seem to arrive when either of us are in the house so havent had a chance to tell them not to do it, and they dont come at any regular time (its supposed to every 4 weeks but they really do turn up when they want to!)

Do I have to pay them the money? I have written to them again telling them I have already cancelled it and wont be paying them, but I am worried they will start knocking mums door when I am not there and harass mum for the money. Does anyone know where I stand legally?

Hi

If you've told them you don't want them to come and they do anyway then you don't need to pay them. I'd make sure that you keep copies of all the letters you send them and tell them one more time.

I'd guess they'll try to get the money but it's perhaps the boss that knows that they'd been told not to come and not the guys who are actually doing the work. I'd make sure those guys know the situation too.

Hi,

Don't be manipulated, you've informed the window cleaner and in effect ended what was actually only ever a verbal contract. The window cleaner will only run his business at a loss for so long.

Dozey.

Hi

Can you not put a notice on one of the downstairs window's that has the companies name that says something like "Window Cleaning Contract has been cancelled (insert date) any further work will be done so unpaid after this date - thank you".

That way there can be no mistake.

Hope you get it sorted soon.

Kaz x
