'Mad Men' and '30 Rock' were among the main winners at last nights 61st Emmy Awards in the US.

According to The Times, 'Mad Men' received the top award of Best Drama for the second year running.

Accepting the gong, Matthew Weiner, the show's director, joked: "We all worked very hard to have [Mad Men] not stink in its second year."

'Mad Men' won six Emmys in total with '30 Rock' taking seven, including Best Comedy, Best Comic Actor and Best Comic Actress for its stars, Alec Baldwin and Tina Fey.

However Fey lost out on the Emmy for Best Lead Actress in a comedy series to Toni Collette, who plays a mother with multiple personalities in 'United States of Tara'.

Fey did pick up a Best Guest Actor award for her skit of the Alaska governor Sarah Palin on 'Saturday Night Live'.

Glenn Close was named Best Actress in a Drama for her performance in 'Damages' while Brendan Gleeson was recognised for his portrayal of Winston Churchill in the HBO/BBC miniseries 'Into the Storm', with the award for Outstanding Lead Actor in a mini-series or movie role. The adaptation of Charles Dickens' Little Dorrit was also a big winner, with honours going to the writer Andrew Davis and the Irish director Dearbhla Walsh.

HBO's miniseries 'John Adams' won 13 Emmys in total, including awards for stars Paul Giamatti, Laura Linney and Tom Wilkinson.

Rick Gervais introduced the award for best writing in a variety, musical or comedy series by pointing out how much more glamorous the Oscars are than the Emmys.

He said: "The thing about the Oscars is, they've got movie stars in there, with their jaw lines and chiselled looks. In this room, I'm probably above-average. Definitely."

'The Daily Show With Jon Stewart' went on to win the gong, and later won the top award in the entire variety, music, or comedy series category, for the seventh year in a row.
