iVillage have just published a gallery of Inspirational Women - http://www.ivillage.co.uk/newspol/picturegallery/popup/0,,713876,00.html

There are some truly remarkable women featured and I was just wondering the following:

1. Do you feel there are any glaring omissions from the list?
2. Who has been the most inspirational woman in your life (famous or otherwise)?

Mrs Ghandi, Margaret Thatcher (you don't have to like them to think that they are inspirational) Princess Diana (ditto).

I'm not sure if I've been personally affected by any particuarly inspirational women in my life to be honest.

Intersting topic though.

I agree with Mrs Thatcher even though I hated her policies.
Florence Nightingale is a glaring omission. I watched an old episode of QI and she also invented the pie chart.
Mary Seacole a black contemporary of Florence Nightingale.
Oprah Winfrey. Not a fan of her show but she is an amazing businesswoman. Rose from poverty to become America's first black billionaire.
Marie Curie - two Nobel prizes!

I can't think of any who directly inspired me. I could always give the cheesy answer and say my mum.

Hi

this is very depressing but shes inspiring lol a mother at my DS school has just lost her husband after 14 years, she has a 12 year old DD and 2 DS 9 and 5 and DD of 8 months, he died of cystic fibrosis( i think not really sure of the name, i was too stunned) which they never knew he had aged 42, the mother was tested and she is a carrier, her 2 boys tested positive, the baby is too young yet to be tested

she showed amazing strength of character, she was told her children might not live past 22, shes a single parent, a widow but she carries on, laughing and joking with the other mothers, will not accept pity she says life goes on

i think she is amazing i am not sure i could put on such a brave front

Message: I think Mia Farrow should be on the list. I saw her recently on television and she is truly dedicated to her causes. She has been a high profile advocate for children's rights, working to raise funds and awareness for children in conflict affected regions, predominantly in Africa. She is a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador and has worked extensively to draw attention to the fight to eradicate polio, which she survived as a child. She really is an inspiration as someone who came from a priviliged background but who's need to help others less fortunate than herself has shown her to be a truly selfless person.
