Hi AJ

An old post I know, but assuming you still have trouble I thought I would reply anyway, as I know exactly how you feel!

Like you I end up not leaving the house for a couple of days and sometimes get the delight of a period every 2 weeks!  My GP prescribed the mefenamic acid, but like you I did not want to be on it forever and I also found that after a while it did not work!  She offered me the coil, but a friend had real troube with it, so I declined!

I saw a specialist who recommended lining ablation - they basically fill you up with boiling water (under anethetic !) and the scar tissue stops periods apparently.  Only a male Dr could have suggested that really! And after that of course having children is off the menu.  Luckily for me I have 1 child - my miracle baby who is now 7!  I had a course of chlomid with similar effects to you so gave up and promptly fell pregnant (miscarriage at 10 weeks) so went away and bought a dog!

Still having the same problems, but have a new specialist who has checked out my piturity gland and thyroid and put me on thyroxine in the hope of a change (nothing yet after 4 months to his surprise!).  However one thing that did happen a few years ago - I did went on a meal replacement diet and lost 4 stone and one of the side effects was that my periods all but disappeared!  Bliss!  This is fine if you can keep the weight off - not likely with thyroid or hormonal problems, but there you go.  Someone told me that it was either the weight loss or could have been to do with the B vitimins in the diet and that maybe my diet was defficient in these before.

So in a nutshell you are not alone - there are more of us out here!  Have hope, as I did manage to have a baby, although I have no idea how - I guess I would be rich if I knew the answer!  I hope you get things sorted one way or another.

Hi Chick

Many thanks for your message.  Yes, I'm still having the problem, but I'm not sure whether the mefenamic acid tablets are working either.  They seemed to be to start with, but I don't take them as early on as my GP suggested (supposed to take them about 3 days before AF is due, but sometimes she just arrives!!!) - so I don't know whether this is affecting their ability to help, or if they're just not that effective for me.  I think I need to go back to my GP now because my stock of mefenamic is pretty low, so I suspect that she'll be asking me how I'm getting on.  She asked me to have some other checks done to make sure that it wasn't something else ie an infection, causing the problem, but they came back negative - so I don't know why, or what the answer is.  I would prefer a hysterectomy, to be quite truthful, as it's extremely unlikely that I'm ever going to have children now - and I hate having to lose two or three days of my life every time this happens.  And it's always when there's something important happening in your life - or a big work meeting....  but my GP shook her head at me when I asked about this and said that I "was far too young for that..." - yeah, great, thanks - so I've to continue suffering like this for the next 10 years, then they might consider that I'm old enough for one....  Might just have to mention that ablation thingy you mentioned and see what she says about that - thanks.

AJB
