Hello!

I have just posted on Formula feeding advice board, but thought i would post here too. (hope you dont mind!)

I am just looking for a little bit of advice if someone else has been in the same position?

My baby is 5 weeks old and is showing signs of Reflux. Being sick all the time, even down the nose. Seems to be in pain, etc etc. Been to docs who have said she is a little young to go on to gavisgon as yet and bring her back if it gets worse.

After a sleepless night last night, due to her gagging all the time on her sick I really want to do something to help her. Phoned HV who didnt give any answers really but suggested maybe trying SMA Stay down formula as that thickens in the stomach.

Has anyone had any experience of this stay down formula? Does it work?

My baby is on Aptamil at the moment. If I do decide to give the SMA a go, do I gradually change the milk over? Changing the milk from Apt to SMA, will it make her worse?

Any advice would be Appreciated

Thanks in advance

Kirsty

oh my goodness hello you!

what fantastic news, congratulations on your new addition Kirsty.

As you are currently on Aptimil I'd suggest their version of the SMA stay down, its called easy digest. Also have a bob over to my other home board, mums club July 09 as there are a variety of discussions about reflux on there.

Short term I'd recommend trying a Dr Brown's bottle, swopping to the Aptimil easy digest and keeping her at a 45 degree angle after feeding so taking the pressure off her pyloric valve at the top of her stomach.

I'm disappointed your hv was so dissmissive as I can imagine how upsetting/worrying it must be if every feed results in gagging and vomiting.

There are a few things it could be...reflux, lactose intollerance, pyloric stenosis.

You also can be prescribed zantac which is a stomach acid inhibitor.

Hi Jo

Good to hear from you. I did wonder whether you would remember me when I saw your a CL here.

Thank you for your advice. I didnt realise Aptamil did easy digest. I will definatly will give it a go as I dont really want to change to SMA. It would of only been last resort. Going out tomorrow to get some Dr Browns.

I must admit I do lurk on July & Aug board. Your board seems very friendly and supportive. Just havent posted as G was born in Aug and with my history didnt want to join a board and jinx things (if you know what I mean!)

Congratulations on the Birth of your little addition. Just saw his pics on FB, he is beautiful. All your children are gorgeous. You must be so proud.

Funny that we had both of our children with a few weeks apart!

Thanks again for your advice!

It depends why he's being sick really babes,

If he's being sick because its reflux then trying a different brand of the thicker type formula won't hurt to try, there is sma stay down, c&g comfort and the easy digest that you are already on (there are others too but those are the mainstream ones) you can combine the e.d. with gaviscon or offer the gav before the feed to line the stomach, if you put it in the feed you may need a faster flow teat to get the stuff through.

If it isn't reflux as the cause behind his vomiting then trial and error really without gp tests, he might have a  lactose or a dairy intollerance both of which would result in formula being prescribed so then therefore free, but there are a few of those too to go through, nutrimigen is the most common one. But if you wanted to try to see if it made a diff c&g do infasoy. My neice was on that one as she used to re-enact the exhorcist at every feed once firing so hard she splashed things 15 ft away.

Jac (jacbo) who has posted on our mc board a few times knows lots about those formulas as her son Daniel has the most severest reflux there is combined with dairy intollerance, and he has had all sorts of scans and tests, the last one being a barium contrast scan to check for gastrointestinal malrotation, which he doesn't have thankfully :o)

hope that helps and that you are ok, you haven't posted much lately.
