Group B Strep is a bacteria carried by about 1/3rd of us, and which can cause fatal infections is newborn babies. It is the UK's most common cause of life threatening infections in newborns affecting 700 babies a year. It can be easily tested with a swab in the last month of pregancy and treated with IV antibiotics in labour. The NHS doesn't however think it important to tell pregnant women about GBS or that private testing is available for as little as £32. I know this because I have had three children, and we only heard about GBS when our first daughter was fighting for her life in intensive care at 3 days old. She did survive but was left blind with severe cerebral palsy. And despite this my next two midwives kept trying to tell me that GBS "is not a problem"! Please vote for the charity Group B Strep Support in Bounty's Charitable Trust Vote http://www.bounty.com/charity/vote . As most women are given Bounty Packs, if GBSS has Bounty's backing then even more women will find out about GBS and take the decision to test for themselves. Many Thanks Leesa
