I have hardely posted since I joined these boards but I have a problem.

My 4.5 month old little boy takes in a ton of air when he feeds. Dr Browns bottles etc do not work because the reason he takes in air is due to the way he puts his mouth on the bottle(this is what the doc thinks after seeing him feed), not due to air in the teat. The problem is he will only take about 3oz of milk then he gets full of air and refuses(usually screams if you try to persist)and wont take more until the air has gone, which can be half an hour, an hour or even at times 2 hours later. Although at night this doesnt affect him so much.

Due to this problem he is often unsettled, and its impossible to have a routine. For 3 months he screamed practically all day long with colic. He then had 2-3 weeks where he was loads better and slept a lot better, but now he's started sleeping less at night and it's becoming increasing harder to get the milk down him. He's a good weight because me and my hubby persist all day with feeding him(lots of bitty feeds) and now 2 night feeds, instead of 1.

I have tried different bottles, infacol, colief, gripe water etc but nothing works. He just seems to gulp down loads air the way he drinks. I am very tired and don't think there is a solution to the problem? Any ideas?

Hello,

Sorry to hear you are having such problems feeding your DS. If it is any consolation I had similar problems with my DD. She suffered the most dreadful colic and was a terrible feeder right up until she was weaned.

It does seem as if you have tried all the things I was going to suggest! I used Dr Browns bottles and Colief too. Have you tried different teats? I am thinking not because of the air in the teat because as you say, you do not think this is his problem. I changed my DD from Dr Browns teats to MAM teats. They are a completely different shape and size to the Dr Brown teats and I guess it is worth a try.

It does sound like your DS is thriving if he is putting on weight. My DD rarely drank more that 3oz at a time either.

I don't know if I have been much help at all really but perhaps try what I have suggested and see if that helps.

Have you spoken to your HV about it? She may be more familiar with this than you doctor.

Unfortunately, some babies are just rubbish feeders! Not what you want to hear though. x
