its 4am and ive been trying to get Niamh off to sleep since 12am. she has been feeding constantly and will fall asleep at the breast and everytime i wind her/put her in her basket she screams and does 'i want food' actions. her nappy is clean. df and i are shattered, ive been sat crying for the last hr. i really dont know what to do, she is great during the day and sleeps nicely in her basket but night time is the opposite. ive got to the stage where i dread nights. we are giving her a cup feed of formula now, we are just desperate for sleep. also i dont know how we will cope when df has to go back to work.

any advice would be gladly recieved. i dont want to give up bf but im really not happy with how things are right now:(

Hi honey

I know its awful but I'm pretty willing to bet you that this is the 10 day growth spurt. It does feel like they have gone insane and just feed feed feed. But tomorrow she will back to something like normal. Sorry there is no instant cure but try to stick with it for now and I hope it improves tomorrow.

Hello darling, Big Hugs firstly you are doing fab and please dont feel so bad sounds like youre off to a brilliant start.

The first few weeks are hard going and the one thing I have learnt is that anything goes for the first few months.

If your little one is happier next to you in bed and attached then I would leave her there. I got far more sleep with my second daughter this way than with my first whom I batteled and battled to get her in her basket!

They both sleep excellently in their own beds now and the notion that you will make a rod for your own back didn't apply in my situation.

So take her in, cuddle up and enjoy a better nights sleep tonight. Read up on co sleeping , its not for ever but it will get you through the darkest nights.

Hope tonight is better.

Angie xxxxx(in waitng for my third, come on baby lol....!)

Aww big hugs honey, you're doing sooooooooo well. A lot of women would have given up by now so you can be really proud of yourself.

It does sound as though there may be a growth spurt going on. Flynn hit his 10 day growth spurt at the weekend and spent almost all weekend attached to me. When I had him weighed yesterday he had put on 10oz in a week!! He has eased off a bit now and the last two nights have been a little easier. I too struggle to get Flynn to settle down until the early hours of the morning, but last night was a bit easier. I decided to head up to bed a bit earlier so that I had him settled up there before the point where he usually wakes up and starts fussing.

Flynn's problem is trapped wind, which may not be your situation, but colicky babies can be mistaken for hungry babies because their natural instinct is to want to suck for comfort. I have had Flynn on Infacol before every feed for a week now and he is still struggling at night, but I am starting to see it work. It is difficult to get his wind up now, whereas before it was nigh on impossible.

The other thing that I think has made a difference is that I have out him into a Grobag to sleep, which seems very cosy and secure - much better than the blankets that he is able to wriggle out of, even if I swaddled him, which he doesn't seem to like. Your LO could be different. Have you tried swaddling? Lots of newborns settle much better swaddled.

And I would second the suggestion that you co-sleep if it helps you get a bit more sleep. I used to do it from time to time with DD. You can do it safely as long as you do your research and are very careful. I daren't do it with Flynn because I'm suffering from horrible night sweats.

Just remember, you are doing a fantastic job, as any of us on here will tell you endlessly whenever you need reassurance. If you can take it one feed at a time I promise you it will get easier with time. Get some sleep whenever you can.

Oh hunny,

It sounds as if u r at the end of ur tether!! ((((((((((hugs))))))))) Have u been eating properly???? Plenty of protein rich foods?? It cud be that where u r so tired and not eating properly that baby is getting thinner less fat rich milk. Have u tried a pacifier?? Alot of people dont like them but in the early days with DD2 it got us through some day days and nights?? Also swaddling is a good idea.........sorry if i am stating the obvious i am just asking questions that i wud go through myself!

Like the other ladies suggest it cud be that its just a growth spurt, but if u r struggling try get some prof advice.

xx
