Message: A very quick question from me on the hoof as I've got a grisly toddler hanging off my leg. Tilly (18 months) has a tummy bug and has had diarrhoea and vomiting for the last couple of days, on top of her teething. Oh happy days! Anyway I just saw the Dr who told me to avoid dairy until her tummy settles. Fair enough. I asked her about BM and she said "oh that's dairy so you should avoid it". Er, I'm feeling a little sleep deprived etc. but I'm not a cow! And it's near on impossible to stop her Bf at the moment, as she desperately wants it for comfort- not to mention the fact that she's eating very little food, so at least she has some nutrition from the BM. I thought that it was OK to carry on BF through these bugs? But am now doubting myself as I'm beyond knackered... Anyone shed any light on this please?

Hi there,

I can see what the GP is saying, as yes generally you should avoid dairy, but generally women aren't still BF at your stage.

I'd say, keep BF - it'll be easy for her to digest, it's on tap (so to speak!) and it's good comfort food. You may find her poo is loose for a little longer because of the dairy though. My only other thought is maybe try not to eat too much dairy yourself, so there is not overload in your milk.

Hope that helps!

I've just had D&V so been thinking about what to do should my DD get it next. I reckon your baby will know what she needs and if she wants a feed I'd give it to her. You know what you want to eat/drink when you're ill, so why wouldnt your baby know?

Hope Tilly is better soon. Big hugs as it cant be nice seeing her so poorly, J x

Keep feeding you will be giving her possibly the only thing she can digest while ill and loads and loads of antibodies! So pretty perfect.

If you eat dairy it is true that a small amount of cow's milk protein will enter your milk, but this hardly equates to your bm being classed as dairy! And as it takes quite a long time to eliminate dairy, I wouldn't do anything to your diet, as she will be better by the time it was completely clear of the protein (though I stress this is in tiny amounts and it is only normally very sensitive babies who would react!).
