Hello

Im Paula and pregnant with baby no 2.  DD was born via emergency c-section, due to fetal distress and getting very stuck. She was born just before her due date at 8lb 11 3/4, im tiny just 5ft and under 8stone.

The consultant has some funny ideas and goes with the theory that baby one gets the birth weight after one parent and baby no 2 off the next, so was trying to assure me that next baby will def be smaller.  Hmm I was 6lb odd late and DH was 7lb 2 late, so her theory is pretty rubbish.

I'll be scanned at 36 weeks to estimate the birth weight so was wondering what everyones experience was on these scans and how accurate they were?

Paula x

Hello you

Nice to see you over here :o)

Well my ds was almost 10lb 2oz (10 days late), I my failed to progress and ended up labouring for a ridiculous amount of time and then was finally given an ecs!  Dd was estimated at first to be big too, I was scanned at 12, 20, 28 & i think it was 32 or 34 weeks.  The 20 & 28 week scans she was measuring big and there were comments she could be bigger than ds but when I had the 32 or 34 week scan they thought she may be average if not smaller although to be honest I was totally unconvinced.

She actually arrived 6 days early and was 2lb lighter than ds!  I was totally shocked as I really thought she would be around the 10lb mark but there you go.  DH was born 4 weeks early and was 8.6lbs so not a bad weight and I was just over 7lb and born on time so your consultants theory could be right!  I always thought the more babies you had the bigger they go but who knows!

Not sure if that helps at all!

Thanks :) its nice to know the scans are roughly accurate.  Im very undecided on the delivery at the moment.  So was worried if I had decided to go VBAC that baby would be much bigger than the scan said.  Argh its so hard if only we had a crystal ball to see how labour would turn out :)

Hiya,

My two children were quite far off on estimated weights DS was guessed to be 9lb 2 which scared me, he was 8lb 6 in the end. Then DD was the other extreme, She was initally supposed to be bigger than DS and then she scared everyone by showing up on the scans to be 4lb 14. They rushed us into hospital as an emergency case with a low for gestational age (LGA) baby needing a SCBU cot. She arrived as a healthy 6lb 4oz baby who was quite cross to be disturbed! She was and still is, just a dainty girl.

I have a friend and her baby was only 4oz heavier than the estimate. I think they're getting more accurate. Having said that I wish someone would have have told me I was expecting a big baby.....DS was 9lb 3oz and I'm only 5ft1

Good luck,

Maybe x
