My DS is 20 weeks old so I'm not planning another just yet but I wondered if it is normal to offer the option of an elective section after and emergency c-section with a 1st baby? My DS was 9lb 3oz and back to back. I'm only 5ft1 so he didn't have room to turn around and became distressed hence the c-section. I was so well and so mobile after my section (midwives even commented) that I'd be quite happy to have an elective section next time but I'm curious to know what the medical profession will advise?

Hello Again,

I had to have an emergency section with DD 2 years ago.  She was too big for me, and got stuck and distressed.  Like you i found the section more of a relief after a bad labour and so look at it quite positive.

Im 18 weeks pregnant now and had a consultant appointment at 12 weeks.  My hospital were really good basically its my decision and they've learnt from experience that they cant push either way, altho they did say no reason  not to try for VBAC etc.  I'll get a scan at 36 weeks to check on baby's size and my decision will be made then.

I did have a postive c-section experiece, altho i did bleed excessively so DH was removed from Theatre.  The only thing that puts me off another section is having a toddler and baby to deal with after.  Obviously DD will need taken to her groups etc so i'll need to be more mobile.  But on the otherhand the thought of going through another pointless labour to end in section is more worrying!

From what i've gathered your hospital cant refuse to give you a section if thats what you want.

Hi

I had an emergency c-section with DS, where I was induced, suffered from hyperstimulation, DS got distressed, and I also didn't dilate past 4cm.

I had an appointment with the consultant afterwards to discuss the birth and I have it in writing that next time she'd recommend an elective c-section before I get to term as next time baby is likely to be as big if not bigger, but I would have the option for VBAC if I so wished.

Not sure if that helps at all? Have you had the opportunity to discuss your birth with anyone?

Hello Maybe

I think most hospitals will let you decide if you have already had a section although some might try and sway you more towards trying for a VBAC.

I had an ecs first time and 2nd time was allowed an elective, I ended up going in to labour a week before my elective date and eventually eneded up with another ecs although it was all very positive.

Hi Lisa,

Your post has made me realise that I haven't had the opportunity to discuss the birth with anyone although the Consultant did visit me the morning after my emergency secion to check that I understood why I needed a section. I feel very positive about my c-section experience and it would worry me that that might change if I spoke to a Consultant. Although I have a beautiful DS I would be a little scared that they would tell me how serious the situation was when they decided to operate. Does that make sense? I suspect I'll have to discuss it if and hopefully when I'm expecting again!
