Total sympathy from me.

My 2 caught them at the end of summer term, we got rid of them, they caught them again in holiday playscheme, we got rid of them, they're now both infested again after a single week at school, grrr! I've had one lot (I wet comb myself weekly just to be safe as I do cuddle them a lot!)

We've recently started using Hedrin as it is a pretty decent shortcut - wetcombing every other day does work (as long as you use a nitty gritty) but it take so much time! WIth the Hedrin we found the dead ones started dropping out pretty much at once and any that didn't die immediately were pretty feeble by the time I did get them.

As I've said wetcoming works too, and might be more comfortable for you. To get rid of the eggs, you can drench your hair in vinegar (stings the eyes, but worth it) - it dissolves the glue that binds the eggs for your hair and a few more days' combing and you're sorted. Using the vinegar means that hair really soaks up the conditioner so you end up with beautiful smooth, shiny hair.

What really gets me is this constant reinfestation. One parent (or more) in my younger DD's class is just not doing their job! My girls have been told they are now on an in-school hugging ban, but obviously I can't be there to check on them!

Message: hi jos, i tried hedrin but it doesn't seem to kill eggs thus despite my combing thoroughly daily i must have missed the odd egg as had new infestation from newly hatched critters, very frustrating. i too have asked my dd not to keep hugging her friend whose mother i have spoken to about my dd's lice incase she gave them to her dd (or if her dd gave them to mine?..!), she didn't seem bothered and i do not have any confidence that she was going to check her dd hair, how can this be. i have actually found it pretty much impossible to get rid of mine despite wet combing thoroughly daily, very hard to comb own hair especially as very long, i have found a place in central london where they claim to get rid of all of them by first hoovering them up and then with use of special glasses etc they pick out all eggs. the whole family is booked in (me, dh and dd) on saturday, this should be fun, make a good picture taking opportunity, have to see the fun side of it. i spoke to dd teacher today saying that for a couple of days she would need to leave school earlier for afternoon follow up appointments; fortunately she was agreeable which was just as well as i would have gone mad otherwise; it is the schools lapse of effort which has made the school over run with nits and it is because of this that i am having to spend vast sums of cash (and time) to try and get rid of them. makes me so mad, we never get notes in dd's book bag about checking their hair for lice but they are constantly 'giving us suggestions' as to what to put in their lunchbox or how much excersise they need. jx

Hi,

It's true Hedrin doesn't kill eggs so you have to repeat it a week later - and in the meanwhile yes, new ones do hatch... With very long, thick hair Hedrin can be difficult - my older DDs hair is like this and getting it saturated does take a lot of persistence. If mine were like that I would have to ask DH to do the job as doing it myself woudln't work, fortunately I have short hair (still very thick though).

Our school does send out leaflets regularly, but unfortunately there are far too many people who don't seem to bother acting on them. Honestly, is wet combing once weekly to check such a bother? I don't think so - I do it on a weekend (as I work f/t) and we do it in front of the telly. It's really not a big thing so why don't more people do it?

I still prefer Hedrin and wetcombing over pesticide treatments, but I do wish the little beasts would just go away!

Jos
