Just thought I'd let you know I did pop him to the doctors in the end. She wouldn't look up his nose (apparently only ENT can help there as it's hard to see) but did check his ears and throat and apparently his tonsils were a bit swollen which could be causing the bad smell from his nose. She said it's quite common in young kids.
