Hi Girls,

Just wondering if anyone has any advice for me. DS sleeps in a vest, babygro and a 2.5 tog sleeping bag. Our house is warm (usually 21 or 22 degrees when I put him to bed). This morning he woke at 5.20am and his little hands were freezing (temp was 18 degrees and heating was just coming on). He's not cold anywhere else apart from his hands, he's really cosy inside the sleeping bag but his cold hands are bothering me. Would you do anything about this? I did try scratch mitts one night but they're so thin they make no difference. As we approach the Scottish Winter (3 degrees this morning!!) I'm wondering if a little cardigan over the sleeping bag would be too much? What do you think? I know its dangerous to overheat but I don't want him to be cold.

Maybe xx

Hi!

I think that as long as he feels a good temp when you touch the back of his neck/top of his back then his body temp should be fine. Next and matalan sell sleepsuits with cuffs that you can turn over to cover their hands like attached scratch mits. That might help but they're a very similar thickness, just slightly thicker. Maybe give his hands a bit of a massage at bed time too. If it does worry you a lot ask your HV when you next go to the clinic.

Maybe a cardi would help when it's colder but then when the heating comes on he might get a bit too warm. Can you set the heating to beat the early chill?

Hope this helps,

x

Babvies have poor circumaltion so hands and feet will always be colder. The place to check is back of neck and tummy. If their warmt hen you have no worries.

DS used to have freezing hands when i got him up in the morning. but he was always fine and he never was bothered by it.

Sophie always has cold hands and i put a pair of mittens on her which seems to do the trick, i know they are thin but i think it just keeps them warm enough not to bother her.

18 is actually the recommended nursery temp, but I must admit I usually have our house at 21/22 also.

Honestly cold hands on waking is absolutely fine its their body you need to regulate. Like others have said your index finger at the back of his neck is the easiest way of assessing true temp.

As soon as he starts moving around when awake his hands will warm back up again, because as Chloe said babies circulation isn't as efficient as ours.
