Hi I am from the mums due Dec 2009 Group

I recently posted on this board. However after today I am becoming more concerned? Should I?

1. What are the chances of bumble moving so the cord is not behind her?

2. Is there any chance she could get distressed at any time whilst she is in the wome?

3. Someone told me today that her mum had the same thing about 30 years ago and they kept her in hospital from 25 weeks upto the birth.

My partner is saying not to worry as nothing is wrong!

My main concern is for my unborn baby and also for my little girl who is 3 in January.

Please help. xxx

"Like the title says I went for a routine 32 growth scan due to the fact I have ulcerative collitis.

Was a little concerned when the sonograph said the cord was presenting itself underneath the baby, and that I would probably need to have another scan at 34/35 weeks to check the position.

When I went into see the consultant he asked how I was, I said I was tired, not sleeping to good and had a lot going on in my head! He then went over the scan and said he had spoken to the main consulant and they were going to keep me in for how long he never said! He then phoned who I think was the registar and basically as bumble growth is very good, a good amount of amniomic fluid around the baby, blood pressure and pee being fine it would be a waste of time for me and the hospital to keep me in..... So why mention it in the first place!!

He then said that I was to keep a record of baby's movements, and if by any chances my waters were to go, to get to the hospital a.s.a.p.

I guess they think it is of concern if the baby was to get engaged and the cord was under her head this would pose problems. He said the baby's head was pretty central but it is uncommon for the cord to be in this position!!!

I think if things are pretty much the same at the next scan they will keep me in, and quite possibly book me in for a planned section.

Which I would prefer especially if it means she will be born saftley.

Anyway, sorry to post what may simple trivial, I just felt the need to share.

Much Love, Tracey (bumble 32'weeks). "

Hi

First off welcome to the board, congratulations on the pregnancy and hugs for having to go through that appointment. No question or condition is too minor to post on here - I am sure it is weighing heavily on your lind and thats what counts.

It sounds like they were just concerned with having you have a prolapsed cord but these are not that common only about one in 200 will have it and it tends to be more associated with medical intervention or people who have alot of amniotic fluid. Having your waters broke seems to be something to avoid but the doctors will know that and avoid it.

The Royal College have two useful guides to prolapsed cords

http://www.rcog.org.uk/umbilical-cord-prolapse-late-pregnancy-information-you or http://www.rcog.org.uk/files/rcog-corp/uploaded-files/GT50UmbilicalCordProlapse2008.pdf

The second one actually states in paragraph 4.2 that a ultra sound scan isn't that usedful in detecting who will have a prolapsed cord as the baby and the cord will move around alot during the pregnancy.

If your waters do go and the cord does prolapse contact the emergency services and your midwife/consultant immediately. They may tell you to adopt the knees chest position (on your knees, bottom in the air with your chest on the floor as this can ease the pressure on a prolapsed cord.

I hopr your pregnancy and birth go without any further problems though. Take care and let us know when your baby is born. Good luck.

Love

Kath
