Hello,

We had our 12 weeks scan last week which showed a thickened nuchal fold of 5mm. We were told the risk of downs was very high so had CVS which came back normal, phew!!

We have to go for more scans at 16 weeks to check progress of the thickening and also see the cardiologist to check for heart defects which could be another cause of the thickening.

Has anyone else experienced this? If so what was the outcome? We are of course hoping it turns out to be nothing but it's so hard to sit here without wondering what if?

I have so many questions. Did a search on google and came up with lots of scary stuff. Any advice welcome,

Congratulations on the pregnancy. Sorry I dodn't reply sooner but I have been ill so haven't been near a computer that much.

I haven't experienced a high nuchal fold score however my little boy does have 2 heart problems so we are under the local hospitals cardiology team. I had to have loads of scans throughout my pregnancy and Morgan has had to have loads of scans for various things since he came into the world.

The waiting is really hard - I alway seem to be waiting for yet another appointment for Morgan's various doctors. I would avoid google for anything medical as the stuff on there tends to be worse case sceanario stuff.

Your next scan should be able to tell you about heart defects or any other issues and gives you another chance to look at your baby (I loved seing what Morgan was up to). Even if your little one does have heart problems they can be sorted - its amazing what they can do on the cardiology department these days.

I know its hard but try to relax and enjoy the pregnancy.

Congratulations on the good CVS test result.

Thanks for your reply. It is reassuring to hear that people have been in a similar situation. What heart problems does your little boy have? (if you don't mind me asking?) I am a cardiac nurse myself (adults) so know a bit about the subject, but not much about in kiddies.

You are so right about google, you can scare yourself silly reading all that stuff. Its so hard not to try to find things out though. I am desperate for information, but sometimes the more you know, the worse it feels.

I am waiting to hear back from the consultant's secretary today about our next appointment.

As you say, trying to take reassurance from the good CVS result, that was the major hurdle.

Morgan has a 2/6 Pulmonary Stenosis and a Coarcation of the Aorta. The Stenosis I wasn't too worried about but the Coarcation had them quite concerned for a while.

We had the diagnosis at 6 weeks after being discharged from Neonatal with a clean bill of health for his heart but a GP picked up the murmur when I took Morgan in as I was concerned that he seemed to be having a few breathing difficulties - turned out he had a cold (yes I am a paranoid Mummy). So it was a quick dash to hospital as both seemed to have developed in the 4 weeks we had been home.

The Stenosis is not getting any better or worse which I take as a good thing and the Cooarcation is looking better, So far we are still being monitored but the time between monitoring is getting further appart which I am also taking as a good thing.

I have recently found out that those two cardiac problems can be associated with NF1 and as Morgan has some other symptoms of that we are currently waiting for an appointment with the consultant about NF1.

It is so hard at times worrying about your little ones but I try to remember that for the majority Morgan is fine and that he isn't having any problems with it he is just a happy little boy.

I hope your little one has no problems and that your next scan and appointment put your mind at rest.

Glad to hear your little boy is well at the moment, and hope he continues to be. It must be hard at times not to worry yourself daft, and I guess it's only natural to over-react sometimes (e.g. the cold!). We've all done it I guess, but it's better than missing something important.

I will let you know how things go at our 16 week scan and echo. Fingers crossed for us,
