Message: Could anyone suggest what they found out to be needs and what are just pretty wants they later thought were useless please? We're on a very tight budget so I want to buy only things that will truly make a difference. Thanks!

Hi Gisele,

I think this is a great idea! In fact, am sure if you look through past messages we did post something similar. So may be worth taking a look.

From my experience I would say needs were:-

A car seat
Pram (try to get one that will see you through from a baby to a toddler if budget is tight)
A bouncer chair (you know one of those reclining chairs you put babies into?)great for baby to nap in during the daytime and also great for when you start weaning them as you can feed them in it.
Don't bother with a high chair -get a booster seat.
Don't bother with a baby bath. Bath baby in the sink!
If you have room to put the cot in your room, do this as babies grow out of moses baskets v quickly!
Buy a cot bed instead of a cot as this will last the baby until they around 3 or 4.
Vests and babygros are the way to go with a baby. You just don't want to fuss around dressing them in pretty little outfits when you are changing them 12-15 times a day!
Budget nappies! Sometimes they are just as good as big brand names - you just need to trial a few and see what works.
Same with baby wipes. You are only wiping poo or faces with them so again supermarket brands are fine.
Stock up when on sale.

Don't bother with:-

Baby shoes
Scratch mittens - just use socks
Diaper genie (you know one of those things that wraps your dirty nappies and stores them in a bin! We got one as a gift. Huge waste of money! You still have to empty the bin, it takes up space and the refill canister are expensive.

Phew that is it for now but am sure I will think of other things.

Be great if others could add to this!

Did you decide on your pram in the end?

x

Hi Kate! Thanks for the info :-)

I'd forgotten to ask about the highchair... I was told by my best friend about the booster seat but was wondering whether it would fit my dining chairs as they are slim and don't have arms... so how does it attach?

My functioning ensuite (as the bathroom isn't and it will cost EUR500 to have the vanity put in, even though we have the insert sink already so no thank you right now!!) has such a very tiny sink it's no good. The room is very small and the sink is in a part only as wide as around 3 feet and it's in front of the doorway (I say doorway as no doors :-S) so we couldn't fit a proper sink. I was thinking if I get a nice big baby bath if I manage to find one so I always have a place for Baby to wash even as he/she grows a little.

Yes I did figure about not getting a moses basket or crib because of the useless cost and MIL said her DD actually refused to sleep in it and loved the cot anyway! But what exactly do you mean by cot bed and not cot? I found this one which is a cot 60x120 and with sides that can come off... is that it?

Yes I did figure Baby would need to change often, wish I could get some nice vests and babygrows that ain't too expensive, it's a wonder the difference in prices from here to what I see on UK sites! My mum got me the loveliest bodysuits from Primark at something like maybe 25% of the price we saw similar ones over here :-S Maybe I'll send my brother on a baby shopping spree (he's living in Coventry lucky him!)

Mum just mentioned the budget nappies this week... said there was some local factory I could go to and get them in bulk, hope it's still open as she remembers this from her own early motherhood though! MIL also mentioned buying in bulk but couldn't say where I can go to get such a deal. I'm thinking of reusable ones for when I'm hope but will first have to see how it goes with catching up with the washing I guess or it might turn out costlier instead!

Baby shoes - wow, I knew babies didn't walk but aren't those designed for the cold weather? Or am I wrong there? The scratch mittens are so cheap I'm getting one pack, socks seem more expensive anyway. Incidentally wanted to ask... how do I decide how big I should get Baby's socks? Mum said my brother was such a big newborn he wouldn't fit into newborn clothes so I'm confused now about getting sized stuff for the first weeks.

Diaper genie... it's hilarious to think of that, sorry! I was thinking of buying a simple bin and line it with normal bin liners. They're going in the rubbish anyway!

Re: the pram... I still love the one I saw last time but found this good deal on a Chicco one, making it only EUR64 more expensive and it comes with a free steriliser or bouncer so in the end I guess it's the same price as the cheaper unbranded one I'd liked. I'd feel safer with the Chicco as never heard of the other brand so can't say how good it will be but it's less heavy to carry than the Chicco so that's where I'm not sure! Also the Chicco pram is smaller, but my mum said Baby will anyway only use it for the very first months, not even up to the 6 months listed on catalogues. So it's between the two right now, unless I see something else that also makes sense. I might also e-mail the local ICandy importer for prices as their shop is on the next island so it's a very long nauseous trip to get there and a little costly, I don't want to make the trip and then find it's way out of our budget.

Oh, sorry I thought for a while I was posting on the MD board, you probably don't know which previous pram I'm talking about! Only I hadn't said anything as I'm not sure yet:

Great idea - I think I agree with all of Kate's points

My main thing I wish I had thought about was prams - I have about 6 (might be more) and I was sooooo desperate for a bugaboo but didnt really look into it properly and just bought it and turns out I really hate the thing! I am a bit of a hoarder so cant bring myself to sell it argh!

Baby bath is just a waste of time, I found it a complete pain and then just ended up putting my boys in the big bath - so much easier!

Ooh and Kates point about baby clothes - The boys had loads of little outfits and in the end I just stuck to babygro's because as soon as I put an outfit on they would either be sick down it of have a dirty nappy that leaked! So much easier to just stick a vest on.

I had bought a bottle warmer but that hardly got used and I found it much easier to just use a bowl with hot water in.

Ummm I cant really think of much else as Kate has covered everything I would say. If I think of anything will be back to add it!

xxx Han
