Dear Ladies,

Over the past 24 hours, poor little Joe has been suffering - with reflux I think. From time to time his muscles go very stiff, he arches his back and curls up his feet when he's lying down and when I pick him up, sticks out his tongue frequently and most alarmingly bobs his head about violently. He's obviously upset although not crying or refusing to feed and we can hear all sorts of sounds in his stomach.

We are winding him frequently, but it's not enough. I'm considering taking him to the GP tomorrow, but just wanted to check what any of you whose little ones have experienced reflux thought and what I should do.

Thanks in advance

hugs

sweetgingercat and Joseph

Hi,

Now, I could be completely wrong on this one, but to me it sounds like it could be wind. All of my three have had this at times, worse in the evenings. Sometimes it seems like colic as well - where there doesn't seem to be a reason for the crying, but because you mention the noises from his tummy, I'd say trapped wind.....

Have you tried infacol or dentinox? I am using infacol, and although it's hard to be sure, I do think it is helping him a little. It's supposed to get all those little air bubbles together, so it's easier to pass.

Typically reflux is where they are bringing up their milk, quite often projectile vomiting - is he doing that? (Although there is a thing called silent reflux where they don't vomit). We thought Daniel had reflux initially, as we had projectile vomiting with every bottle for a while, and the advice we were given was that infacol may help if his vomiting is caused by wind, or changing formula may help if it is an allergy, or finally if it really is reflux - go to the doctor and get baby gaviscon prescribed.....luckily Daniel is only badly sick once or twice a day now.

Bit of a jumble of info, sorry, but it might help to point you in the right direction!

Good luck!

Dear Jo,

Thanks for your reply and advice. I did initially think it was wind, but he is sicking up his feeds - not just after he has finished feeding, but at any time really and I'm constantly changing my tops and washing regurgitated milk out of my hair. It is not projectile vomiting though. I also read that sticking out his tongue was a symptom of reflux because its a response to acid in the mouth.

I haven't tried either infacol or dentinox, is it possible to get them without a prescription? I also breastfeed exclusively and have a bit of a choccy thing going at the moment, so wondered if that might be responsible, although if I'm honest my choccy thing has been going on for quite a while now...

I'll ring the doctor tomorrow.

hugs

Hi

Mollie is always sticking her tongue out to excess really and i asked at the hospital today if it was anything to worry about, the doctor just laughed and said 'thats what babies do'
I felt a right fool, i knew thats how babies learn but she seems to do it a lot more that i thought was 'normal' but obviously not lol

She also has lots of stuff sloshing around in her belly but after a while of winding her and a few good burps/trumps it seems to stop

We use Dentinox and its £2.19 from Asda, we put it in each bottle (max of 6 per day) and its helped a lot with the wind

That's no fun is it? I have so much stuff with sick on, and can't get it through the wash quick enough! Even though it's only a couple of times a day.

You may find it just stops, but I would definitely call the doctor like you say. My docs have always been a bit useless and just say that 50% of babies are sick, but they weren't in my house when he was plastering the walls, floors etc! but the HV told me that the doc could prescribe baby gaviscon that can help vomiting/reflux.

As Deb said, you can get Dentinox from the shops, same with Infacol. We get ours from Asda, think it was about £3.19. Both are the kind of things you have to continue using as they build up in the baby's system, and if you stop for a day or two, you are back to square one. Worth a try if your doc is no help?

I really hope it isn't reflux, as I think it's mostly a case of waiting it out and stocking up on muslins!

Good luck today!

Jo x
