HI

My DD is 22 weeks old and exclusively breast fed but over the last few days she has been very fussy with her feeding and has taken to feeding for about half of her usual time then coming off chewing her hand as if still hungry and refusing to latch back on then half an hour later i have to feed her again.

Should i start giving her solids now or stick it out until she is 26 weeks

Thanks

Gemma

Nothing you have described here would usually be taken as a sign that your LO is ready for solid food. Babies do get fussier at the breast as they get older and more aware of their surroundings; she might be starting teething; she might be having a growth spurt...? The signs to watch out for that will show she is ready for solids include being able to sit up by herself (not necessarily for ages, but definitely a bit), be starting to work on her pincer grip (so trying to pick up small things between thumb and forefinger) and be able to reach out, grab stuff and get it into her mouth.

Hi

Thanks for your reply, i probably should have mentioned that she is already quite good at picking things up between her fingers and getting it to her mouth but she is not really stting alone yet.

She may be having a growth spurt though, i probably will wait as i did wnat to get to 6 months exclusively bf but just didnt want to deny her food if she needs it.

Cheers

Hi Gemma

I know this is a late reply but just to say I don't think she is ready. It sounds like she is just more efficient at feeding - it does happen at this age and people start to panic that they're not getting enough milk.

I started my son off (he's exclusively bf) at 5 months because I was returning to work at 6 months and it was a complete waste of time! Because breastfed babies are used to lots of flavour in their milk they don't like bland baby rice and purees. When he hit 6 months it was like someone flicked a switch in him, and he went straight onto what we eat, just whizzed up. I cook from scratch all the time so there's no salt, and it's much easier than making all purees!!
