Message: DD is seventeen months, and dropped her morning nap at about eleven months. Since then, she will sleep for a good two hours or so in the afternoon, BUT if she sleeps for even five minutes in the morning, nothing will persuade her to sleep later on. It's getting ridiculous - this morning, she fell asleep in the car with DH for, literally, two minutes on their way back from shopping; here we are at two o'clock, about forty minutes past the time she's normally absolutely on her last legs, and she just can't/won't sleep. Anyone know what's 'normal' in nap times at this point? I can't believe that no sleep at all during the day is doing her any good, particularly as it tends to make little difference to how she sleeps at night, unless, that is, it makes it harder to get her off to bed! I have friends whose babies are considerably older than DD, and they still sleep twice; I get looks that suggest I'm depriving her of her morning nap as it is, so god knows what people would make of days like these...

Message: My two were just the same: all I can suggest is doing whatever you possibly can to prevent her falling asleep in the morning or if she does, let her sleep for a decent length of time then!
You *know* not to compare with other people ;) and to ignore Looks. Both mine went down to one after-lunch nap before they were a year old; they both dropped naps entirely shortly after turning 2. I have a good friend whose LO needed 3 sleeps a day until she was 2 (and carried on having one until she was 4); my MIL swears both of hers had an afternoon nap until they started school - though it is possible they were just shut in their bedrooms for an hour after lunch so I take whatever she says with a huge dollop of salt. They are al different!

Message: I think that it's a stage that they go through - I know DD1 sometimes skipped her nap at 18 months (just when I was heavily pg and could have done with a break!), but now, at 2.5, would sleep for 2 hours if I let her (although I only give her 1 hour 15 as otherwise she wakes at 5.30am). One thing that I do do though is she likes to sleep with her books, so I work on the basis of if she's in bed lying down 'reading' to herself, it counts as a nap. If she won't sleep, can you try doing quiet stuff - eg sitting with stories for an hour, or pretend tea party etc, so she gets to stop for a bit, even if she doesn't sleep.

Hi there,

My little one is a bit like that too. Lucia is 1 year old next week and she has a 20min nap at 9.30am and then 2 hrs after lunch around 12.30/1pm but if I let her have even 2min more then 20min you can guarantee the nap in the afternoon will be very short and then she will be very groggy the whole afternoon but will not want to sleep. I feel like the worst mother in the world for waking her up after 20min but it has to be done as she is much happier for the day if I do. This nap was 45min long couple of months ago and I have gradually cut it down so expecting to drop it altogether very soon and I can't wait for it.

I think you just have to do whats right for her as they are all different. I think some babies are just very sensitive to the amount and time of sleep they get and we have to cater around that and some babies just do whatever and still manage very well.

All the best

Hi

Ds is 20ms and on one nap a day (as were both my dds at this age). He also forgoes the nap if he sleeps at all in the morning or has a really short one even if the morning one was a few minutes

To be honest 3 kids in I have given myself up to it, LOL! Sometimes he naps in the pram on the school run so not much I can do about it. I just let him sleep and cram him into bed early in the evening when he is extremely tired. Doesn't seem to have done him much harm.

I think I would have worried more with No.1 but like I say most time I don't have much choice about it.
