hello there,

Just spotted this board and hope you don't mind me joining in.

My son is 3 and a half and is tiny for his age. It was noticed at 7 months by the hv, whom refered him to a growth clinic where I have been taking him every 6 months. They have done loads of blood tests and can't find out why his growth is so slow, he has seen a endocrine specialist but he couldn't find a hormone related problem for slow growth. Every time I take him they repeat the same blood tests and nothing. Last time I took him the nurse said she didn't think he had grown at all but my son wouldn't stand still and the height measurement was only an approx, so no idea if he had or had not grown. The specialist did say that my son would need to have a hand xray when he is 4 to see if his bone growth is behind which is quite common.

I am anxious about this as I have been taking him to this clinic for 3 years and no answers, all I want to know is if my son has a growth problem, just want an answer. Apart from being small my son is just fine and a normal 3 and a half year old.

Hiya Avanka,

Welcome to the board and so glad you found us! We are a quiet but supportive board.

Do you think your son could just be a small wee lad? I mean,if he has had all the tests and scans and they are all normal, what else could it be?

My DD is 2 on Tuesday and small for her age. 12-18 months clothes are big on her and is 2nd centile on her growth and weight but apart from other issues I have had with her walking (didn't walk until 20 months and now still struggles to get up off the floor to standing on her own) she is a little happy healthy little girl.

It just sounds like they are just keeping an eye on your son which is good and am guessing you will not know anymore until he has his hand x ray at age 4 which hopefully will be normal.

Trust your Mother's instinct and if you think he is a normal 3 and a half year old then he probably is.

Keep us posted. Am sure if any of the other ladies have experience of this they will post a message.

Take care

Hello Ananka

Welcome to the board. It is always worrying when professionals are concerned by these things. My boys were prem and the Dr was always going on about them being underweight. 2 years later they are still underweight. In fact I noticed this morning that one of them is wearing 3-6 month trousers :-)

Good luck with all the tests and like you say the good thing is that he is like a normal 3 1/2 year old
