Hello!

Where abouts in Thailand are you? What took you there? I've holidayed there a few times now and loved it (I know, I know, completely different from living somewhere :o))

I imagine it is pretty daunting being pregnant somewhere that is so different from the UK. Have you looked up any local expat sites on the net?

I'm Dawn and we're in Australia and have been here 3 1/2 years now, my DH is Aussie so we have his family here to help with our two daughters (nearly 5 and 18 months). Do you have any other children or is this your first one?

Dawn

Hi Dawn

Thanks for the message!

Am living in Bangkok - been here 3.5 years and before that a brief spell in KL, Malaysia!  :) When I was 32 i had a mini crisis - I loved my holidays but a single girl with a mortgage - it was hard to do - so looked for jobs abroad and 10/05 moved to KL.  It was always there the need to wander but was never in a position to do so!!  I liked KL but the job was horrendous - as fate would have it a friend of a friend knew someone here in BK looking for females to work at their company and by Jan 06 I was in Bangkok!

In April 06 I was at a football match with the guys I worked with and met this wonderful man called Kevin - he was out in bangkok on holiday visiting a mutual friend!  he was retiring from the army at age 40 after joining at 16 and to cut a long story short - it was love at first sight, he moved out here in Aug 06 and we got married in Aug 07 in Scotland!

We have no plans to return to the UK - the lifesyle here is brilliant and we just love it - I know my mum was really against me moving away but they have been here  a few times now and can see why we love it and why it would be hard for us to make a life agian right now in the UK - Kev has got a good job and I will probably leave work and do something different as not sure I can do what I do part time ( not sure they will want me to and with there being no laws out here etc well....!!)

Its been quite scarey - this is our first baby and neither of us have children from previous relationships.  There is a Babies and bump club here but all activities are in the day time and with me working at the moment i cant get there.  The hospitals are amazing tho and I have a few friends here that have had babies so am ok.  This site is brilliant too plus we have loads of nieces and nephews so lots of practice!!

The hardest part is being away from our parents - my parents and sis and her family are over for xmas and then we will bring my mum and dad out here agian and Kevs mum when wee mcmurtrie is born but i know that it will be hard for us all us not being there and them not seeing their grandchild as often as they would like - thank goodness for skype!

So where abouts are you in australia - we have friends in Woollagong, the gold coast and brisbane and we had planned to do a three week trip in feb - this has now been put back for another time!  but definatly one we will do!

Its nice to be in touch with another "expat" and look forward ro speaking again soon!

Rach

Wow I bet that has been amazing living in both KL and Bangkok. I have travelled through both Thailand and Mayalasia a few times now and loved them both. Our stopover to the UK is in KL for two nights so am trying to find accommodation on the net now which is fun, not, lol! I'm too fussy as want a serviced apartment and can't decide on which one!

Do you speak Thai or Malaysian as you've been there for a while? Must be pretty cool to know the local language, how you'd ever start learning though must be so confusing. At least you know too that there are baby classes that you can join once you've had the baby and aren't working.

We're in Geelong which is an hour west of Melbourne. It's a fair sized town and has pretty much everything you need here. Only a 30 minute drive from the start of the great ocean road too which is good in the summertime. We're still in winter at the moment though and I'm looking forward to the nicer days - well not the ones over 40 degrees! Soon I'll be moaning that I'm too hot!

Well better go as little one is waking from her nap.

Bye for now
