Hi everyone

This is my first post on this board, although I've lurked on it from time to time for a while. I have one child, a son who was 2 in July this year. I have thought about HE before, but have always been scared off by how 'big' and daunting it all seemed. However, I have read a little about it now and it's starting to appeal to me again. There are several reasons for this. The main one being that 4 seems far too young to me to be sending my child to school, especially as he is a July baby and would be one of the youngest in his school year. Also, DS is, like most young children, very inquisitive and lively and just so happy that I have misgivings about sending him to school and then finding that he is moulded to fit what a teacher wants him to be. I used to be a teaching assistant in a primary school, so I have experience of the school system and whilst the school I worked in was lovely, there were so many restrictions on what the teachers could do, and the time they had to spend with the children and things just felt so rushed sometimes. Then there was all the stress of SATS too...

I've joined Education Otherwise, which I know people have mixed views on, but I thought it would be a good resource whilst I'm still such a novice. I know I'm thinking about all this very early, as DS is only 2, but I really want to investigate all the options and see if HE would be right for us. I must admit that I do find it all quite baffling and daunting, so would appreciate any pointers to books, blogs, websites, as well as anyone's own experiences of HE.

Sorry I've gone on so much. I'm just trying to get things straight in my head!

hello and welcome,

It does seem scary if you look at your son's whole education at one time, you could try breaking it down into segments i.e early years, ks1, ks2 etc etc.

Good luck, I'm sure you'll have fun

Hi

I found books where the best place to start.

I got Free Range Education, The Unschooling Handbook, and various ones by Alfie Kohn and John Holt.

Free Range Education is definitely a good one imo.

Thanks for the welcome :-) I got all my info through from EO last week and that looks like it should be useful. I go to a Steiner based toddler group with DS and several of the mums there seem quite commited to start HE too. I'm definitely going to look into it properly and see how it could work for us. I haven't made a concrete decision yet though, as I have quite a while to decide.
