Hello all,

Just had the first of 3 parents evenings, this one was our youngests - she started in reception this year.

Shes settled well, although i question it a bit as when she comes out of school she is usually very stressed - ie today she came out crying that all her buttons were not done up.  Shes also had accidents (wetting) at school for the last 3 days :(

On the plus side her learning is on schedule, although she is very shy apparently! she is slowly making friends and prefers to be led rather than be a leader - fine by me.

Anyway all ok but wondering if anyone elses school uses THRASS reading scheme? I find it very confusing and not sure how best to help Emma with this, she is about a year behind the others because she didnt go to nursery attached to school (this school was not our first choice). Because she dosnt share books so well with teachers they have asked me to help her at home more - she loves books at home.

So anyway anyone with experience of Thrass and has any tips would be fab!

Hope all ok

Sara

Hi Sara

Sorry that you are seeing a different side to DD that what school are.  I take it you told school she is having accidents and is very stressed.  Often children do have accidents when they start school but school should be aware of it and encouraging DD to go to the toilet frequently.  There's nothing wrong with being shy, is she shy at home with friends and family ...?

The school IMHO should have given you some help to help her.  I don't know much about Thrass as I've never had to use it.  I found this: http://www.thrass.co.uk/features.htm which seems to explain the system quite well.  You can't be the only parent finding this different.  Is it worth suggesting to them that they run a parent workshop for R parents so that everyone understands the best way to help their child.

I hope that Joseph and Thomas have had a good term also.

Tracey

Hiya,

Yes school are well aware of the accidents, i'm telling them and they have said they will encourage her to go. She is on school action plus because of social concerns although they have never mentioned this so not sure what targets she has been given - i plan to go and talk to the senco there soon. She came out of school yesterday stressesing about her shoes and we ended up having a real tantrum and tears for an hour.

She isnt shy at all at home - quite the opposite, i wouldnt say she is very shy with other adults normally either, shes very chatty normally. Its other children shes always had problems with, it does seem as if school is seeing a different side.

They did have a Thrass session for parents but as my DH was working away and i couldnt get a sitter it meant i couldnt go :(. They did say they would go through it with me but the only time they could do it was after school when i cant stay because i have to run from one school to another to get my boys. I aasked for literature to read but they said they didnt have anything :(

Not too happy at moment, esp as it wasnt our first choice school, its frustrating knowing things would have been different at other school.

Anyway! thankyou for the website, will have a read!

Sorry for the moan!

Hi Sara

Sorry not to reply before now; I couldn't get on the board or any of ivillage and then have been away.

I'm a little concerned about what you are saying.  Is it worth approaching the boy's school to see if any places have become vacant, explaining what is happening at DDs school.  I would make that appointment to see the SENCo asap - really she shouldn't have been placed on SEN register at all let alone SA without you knowing exactly why.  She really shouldn't be getting stressed to the point that it is causing difficulty after school.  If you are not happy with the answers you get make an appointment to see the head and express your concerns.

Hope you are all having a nice half term break.

Tracey
