Hi everyone

I was just wondering which you prefer to see your LOs doing for their Christmas production.  Personally I love the traditional nativity and this year being in a church school means that we can do one.  I'm also looking forward to the carol service we are going to be doing which is for the community and will be a first.

Hi Tracey

As a non-Christian, I quite like it when the school does a non-traditional Nativity play though to be honest, I don't really mind either way as I just love seeing my children dressed up and joining in.  It's just so cute.  At our school, the nursery does a Nativity and then the primary 1-3s do one aswell so this is the last year that my eldest will be in a Nativity.  The primary 4-7s do a Summer term play instead.

Our school manages to combine the original Nativity story into a modern play. It normally works well and is generally a fun production but last year it went completely wrong. The play was written so that a few children got big parts and everyone else was pushed to the sidelines.

You're guessing that my DD didn't get a big part aren't you? There were loads of other kids left out too but i complained and was told 'there's always next year'. My point was that there wasn't as it was DD last year of doing the Nativity since she's moved into the Juniors (they have a carol service instead).

I guess it's hard to make sure everyone gets to shine but it had never been a problem in the past. I'm hoping they come up something a little more fair this year though DS in reception will only have a small part anyway (and due to his shyness would probably prefer not to be on the stage at all).

Like Zarina, DD's school does a part nativity, part modern play.  I remember they did "The Grumpy Sheep" one year.  Although "Mary and Joseph and Baby Jesus" were sitting at the edge of the stage,  the story was based round the shepherds and their sheep.  All the infants are involved in the play although some obviously have speaking parts and most don't.  From the upper school only the choir is involved in singing a variety of songs and carols and sometimes the ensemble plays.  There is no show for parents for DD's year but once they get to Primary 7 (the final year) they put on a Summer play.  At least a quarter of the school is of a religion that isn't Christianity but nearly all come to watch.

Oh traditional, definitely :)  We always did a a traditional nativity play at our primary school concert, but had lots of other little plays as well.  I'm guessing there's not as much time these days for rehearsals though!

Apparently my DS's pre-school do some sort of Christmas show - I can't wait :)
