I want to get my dd of 5 eyesight checked (we thought the health check at school did it but apparently not) - now do I go to a normal optician or do I make an appointment at the health clinic where I used to take her as a baby/toddler etc?

Sorry if sounds like a dumb question!

Hi there ,

As ur dd is now 5 u can take her along to the optician :) They will very pleased to make an appointment and see that u r keeping a check on her vision too . They are really good with the kids too  :)

I think due to money  (as always) the goverment only select  a few children from each school to have a full  medical now and thats not as thorough as i rmbr the medicals we had at school ...............

Oh and don't put urself down , its not a dumb question !! Its dumb to sit and ponder and not ask at all  ..

Hi,

When DD was a baby I was worried she had a squint (they run in my family) and then she was refered to an eye person at the local NHS walk in centre. They said she was fine and knocked her off their lists at around age 2. But I suppose I could always request her records if I was worried again. In the mean time though I also think a regular optician would be fine. If she doesn't recognise letters yet they will do it with shapes instead of E,N,D, H, C, U... (you can tell I spent far too long at opticians when I was a kid!!)

Hi, I don't normally post on this board but i thought i'd reply since i took my 4½ year old DS for his first eye test yesterday.

He went to my normal opticians and had the appointment after me. He's also been there once before when his sister had her eyes checked so he felt at ease. It's free and my optician had said to take him just before he went into reception year.

Since he knows all his letter lowercase and they test uppercase, they have a special flip book with letters in which got progressively smaller which he had to match to the card in my hand. When it came to close up reading he also had to match the tiny letters on a page to the card i held.

They also tested him for colour blindness (using the adult test) since his dad is red/green colour blind.

Everything was ok including no colour blindness which is a relief.

Message: I thought they all got a pre-school eye test organised through the HV. Mine did, and then if they have problems you get referred to the eye clinic at hsp. My dd was seen by them and prescribed glasses, and after a year and 1 more test we were able to go to our own optician. From then on it is just normal checks. DDs eyes improved, and now she has to have yearly checks but doesn't wear specs, unless her eyes hurt. Which is never lol!
