Science & Education experts Katherine Mathieson and Catherine Teague will be answering your questions on our Your Child's Learning message board. Date: Tuesday 27th October Time: 11am- 12
Many parents have questions about science education, how and why they should encourage their children to pursue these kinds of topics.
The world faces serious issues such as pollution, climate change, disease, food supply and even caring for an ageing population, all of which need creativity and innovation in science and engineering to find solutions. It's essential that we as a nation support the young people who will make vital discoveries and inventions a reality and the, National Science and Engineering Competition does just that.
Katherine Mathieson is Director of Education at the British Science Association. Her role includes overseeing the , National Science and Engineering Competition, (open to 11 to 18-year-olds) and CREST, a scheme that supports young people's project work in science, technology, engineering and maths . Over 25,000 young people get a CREST award every year and the scheme has been running for over 23 years.
Prior to joining the British Science Association, Katherine ran NESTA's Young People's Programme where she set up a new department dedicated to supporting young people to take an active role in innovation. She also supported a range of projects that helped young people to learn about science in an exciting and fresh way.
Katherine's own background in science includes roles with a pharmaceutical company, the Forensic Science Service and a charity that answered science questions from the public.
In her spare time, Katherine is a volunteer for GirlGuidingUK and a Trustee of the international exchange charity Commonwealth Youth Exchange Council.
Catherine Teague is Senior Executive and qualified careers advisor responsible for careers at the Engineering and Technology Board (ETB). Catherine also works closely with the British Science Association on National Science and Engineering Week (NSEW) focussing on engaging the engineering community with a range of activities during the week. She is also a member of the Institute of Careers Guidance (ICG).
Catherine is mum to George 4 and Freddie 3; she is also Vice-chair of her local community pre-school
The finals of the National Science & Engineering Competition will be held at The Big Bang Fair on 11-13 March 2010.
Katherine and Catherine look forward to answering your questions on how to encourage your children to be interested in science and anything else about the campaign and competition.
