Message: After six months of badgering my GP, my son was seen by a paediatric consultant today. Even my GP, Health visitor etc told me that constipation was normal in childhood, the hospital has told me a different story. He has been constipated for so long that he may have long term bowel damage. We are certainly looking at treatment for at least six months - he has been prescribed Movical.
I am so annoyed with my GP and HV. This could all have been dealt with months ago if the GP and HV had listened to me (eventually I burst into tears in front of another GP - I think being 6 months preg helped as well).
So I suppose my advice is...if your child's poo problems go on for more than a couple of months (bearing in mind that symptoms can take up to 6 months to appear!)...insist that you are referred to a specialist.

I do hope your son doesn't have longterm bowel damage.  How frustrating to have your GP and HV put this down as 'normal'.  Can you complain to surgery manager?  It might not help your son, but it might highlight this issue and mean another child's symptoms are not ignored for so long.

Thanks Merith...i am so fed up with my surgery that I am thinking of changing...the same Dr told me I wasn't anaemic because I had colour in my cheeks (am on 400mg of iron a day now) and that DP has strained his shoulder (herniated disc requiring surgery).

But I have just picked DS up from nursery and they told me that he quite happily used the toilet today, so hopefully we are now on the right road!

I just hope that other Mums will read this and realise that just because this is a common problem, it doesn't mean it is ok!

Hiya, So sorry to hear about the problems you have had on getting your son referred. I had similar problems with my daughter (now 23 months). She started suffering constipation from around 12 months old and I was back and forward to my GP so many times. I was told it was normal and not to worry etc. We were told give her more fruit and veg (we are vegetarian so our diet has lots of fruit and veg in it), then told to give her fruit juice (my daughter doesn't like fruit juice). Eventually given Lactulose which didn't work. Then Docusate which didn't work. Finally after having an awful night with my daughter screaming in agony for 90 minutes while trying to have a poo and me feeling so helpless and not able to help her, I went back to my GP and begged to be referred to a consultant at the hospital.

Turned out my daughter had a tear which was causing her agony every time she opened her bowels and not allowing the tear to heal. She was put on Movicol which is brilliant for her.

Her tear has now healed but she is still on between half to one sachet a day now and this seems to be doing the trick. I think it helps that she is older so drinks a lot more fluid than she used to when she was younger.

Too often GPs and HVs dismiss our concerns by saying it is nothing and is normal when we know otherwise!

I do hope you find your son improves with the Movicol and that there is no long term damage. Carry spare clothes and nappies as Movicol poos can take you by suprise! You have been warned. x
