Hello girls,

DS potty trained about 3 months ago and aside from the first week did brilliantly. However in the last 3 weeks or so he is just having "accident" after "accident" Unlike many of my friends children he does not get upset about being wet, infact he thinks it's funny a lot of the time. It's as if the novelty of doing wees on the potty has worn off and he simply can't be bothered.

I'm really not sure what to do now. I'm starting to not want to take him anywhere as he'll just wee on people's carpets without caring. We all accept accidents but constant weeing is another matter. DS thinks we should persevere but I'm wondering about going back to nappies? He is 3 in a week. Poos are fine. We had major poo issues in the first week but since then only 1-2 poo accidnets so don't really want to step back for this reason.

We're still doing reward chart as an incentive. Anyone got any suggestions?

Hi Kate

At not quite 3, he's still young and to avoid stress and upset and soggy carpets you could put him back in nappies and try again in a month or so.  Perhaps discuss it with him - tell him if he keeps wetting his pants/clothes/carpets then he'll need to wear nappies until he's a bit bigger.  If he objects then you know it's worth continuing with pants.  If he's not bothered, then he's probably not quite ready.

If you want to continue with pants, perhaps get some waterproof ones - I had Bright Bots and Motherease washable waterproof pants and my DS wore them if we were out, at nursery etc.  It meant that if he did pee himself, most of the wetness was contained and it stopped them embarrassment of wetting on someone else's carpet.

Let us know how you get on!

Thanks for your reply,

I have wondered about going back to nappies but DH doesn't think we should because we know he can do it as had 2 months dry. Also we had some difficulties with pooing for the first 2 weeks and now he's ok with that we don't want to go backwards really. The trainer pants idea is a really good one and I will certainly invest in one.

I'm starting to think it really is attention seeking behaviour (though why he thinks he gets more attention if wet is beyond me!) and we just have to ride it through.

I suppose he does get more attention if he wets himself because you can't just ignore it... perhaps get him to do some of the mopping up/taking off wet clothes.

You will probably need a few pairs of the trainer pants.  They really are worth the investment as they take a lot of the stress out of the accidents.
