Hello,

My son will be 3 next week and has been potty trained for about 6 months now.  He rarely has an accident at home but when he's at nursery he constantly has accidents.  To start off with I put this downt to him having too much fun, but this week it got bad and he went through 5 pairs of clothes in one day.  The staff say that they were taking him to the toilet often and sometimes he would go and other times he would say 'It's not coming' and not go.  He would then have an accident a few minutes later.

He had a pooh today which was like rabbit droppings and I know he's not keen on doing a pooh on the toilet, so maybe he needed to do one and wasn't trying until he thought he could do it in his pants.  I will give him some latulose for this today but just wondering if anyone else has had the problem of child only having accidents at nursery and how it was solved?

Hi Hannah

It's quite common for children to find it harder to stay dry at nursery.  They are not in their home environment and there are so many distractions etc.

My son often wet himself at nursery - partly because he didn't want to ask to go to the toilet, partly because he was engrossed in a game or didn't want to miss 3 mins of play to go to the toilet.  It was something he grew out of.

At only just 3, your DS is still very young and I expect in the next few months he will get the hang of toileting at nursery.  I would just remind him when you drop him off that he needs to keep his pants dry (encourage, never scold), praise him when he manages to do this, and keep communicating with the nursery staff to see if any progress is being made.

Let us know how you get on too!

Thanks for your reply - I think I was more worried at how he's gone from being fairly good to quite bad there - I think he may have just got lazy!

He kept asking me to go to the toilet 'like daddy' - standing up.  I decided to let him have a go at the least to see if this encouraged him.  He's actually fairly good at it and because he is so proud and excited he seems to be asking more rather than us reminding him - even when playing outside.  I will see how he gets on at nursery this week now he's 'just like daddy' - bless him!

Lol, bless him.  My younger DS (age 6) has a terrible aim so I insist he pees sitting down (otherwise it ends up over the floor/wall/etc).

Hi,

My DD also used to be like that. I trained her at 2.5 and she was still coming home wet from nursery - not that she had accidents but her underwear was always soaked. After a bit of 'being nice' and asking her carers to take her often I turned a bit 'nasty' and did what everyone told me not to do - I told her if she was wet when she got home she couldn't watch Tom and Jerry - it worked pretty fast. Recently she has stopped wearing nappies at night too, so if she is wet during the day I 'threaten' to put her back in nappies and it works a treat!

love
