If you feel he's not ready then I would wait. It's not your HV or MIL that will be mopping up the puddles, so I would ignore their 'advice' and just wait a while. I would read books about peeing in the potty and have a potty around the house to 'practice' with. My boys both used to sit on the potty before their bath. Sometimes they would pee, othertimes they would not. If they did a pee in the potty we would cheer and clap but we didn't pressurise them to 'perform'.
I too had the Gina Ford potty training book (I don't rate her 'contented baby' books but the potty training one has some good tips in it) but there is no point trying to potty train in a week unless your child is ready. My DS#1 did it in 3 days (we followed the advice in the book). My DS#2 wasn't ready (I tried him at 2 and a half the same as his brother) and it just meant I had over a year of puddles on the floor, soggy pants/clothes etc. If I could turn the clock back, I would wait until he was ready rather than doing it just because the books say he is 'ready' (the correct age).
Bed wetting can be genetic (my DS, age 6, still wets the bed and I wet mine until I was 12) so it's quite likely that readiness for potty training could be genetic too. If I were you I'd delay your son's trip to the HV. He could change so much in 10 months, it seems crazy to do a pre-school check up too soon. I'm in Scotland so my children didn't start school until age 5.5 so the fact my DS age 4.5 was still regularly wetting his pants wasn't an issue. There were several children at his nursery age 4-5 still in pull-ups and nobody batted an eyelid.
Let us know how you get on.
