Message: I hoop that someone can help me. This weekend my very recent ex partner has been arrested for abh. The basics are that he started on me in a public house being very intimidating etc in front of me and my girlfriends. In the end I tipped the remains of my drink over him and walked away. As I did so I was struck from behind and ended up on the floor cutting myself. He then went for a second strike but was restrained. I have a small cut to the leg and significant bruising to my side. I will press charges and there will be cctv. Does anyone know what the likely outcome of a situation like this may be. Any advise will be apreciated.

Hi,

I am really sorry to hear about the attack from you partner and I hope that you feelig a little better now??

Did you call the Police at the time?  Was he taken into custody?  If you did then he was probably released on bail?  He will then have to attend a plea court and either plea guilty or not guilty.  If he pleads guilty it will be referred to Probation for them to assess him and make a Pre Sentence Report.   Based on this report it will then he heard in court and depending upon the severity of the assault it will be one of several things.  He might be sent to prison, he may be asked to do some community service or the most likely outcome is he will be put on a 2 year supervision order with Probation and made to attend a mens domestic violence programme.

Whatever you think about any of the above "please do not" retract you statement or intention to prosecute him for violence.  What he did is violent and needs to be addressed and punished.

Hope this helps

Please do not worry about the drink pouring incident.  He attacked and injured you.   Please do not withdraw your statement as that will only confirm to him that it's ok to behave that way.  He may go onto attack another person and he is not being given the help he needs to overcome this anger.

There will be lots of support put into place for you and it will not be as stressful as receiving another attack from him.  You need to be strong and see it through so that he gets his true punishment and the help that he needs to resolve his anger and violence issues.   Remember 2 women a week are killed because of escalating violence with their partners.  So he needs help and support as much as you do.

Take care
