Hi everyone.

Been lurking on this board for a while, but this is my first post.

DH is being posted to BATUS and I have heard very mixed reviews about the place. Some people rave about it, while others say the camp and accommodations are "out in the sticks" and there is nothing to do.

I was wondering if anyone on this board has been to Canada...any information is very much appreciated.

Thanks in advance

Shazx

I'm afraid I can't help with things about BATUS as it's somewhere my DH hasn't been, but just wanted to say Hello and welcome to the board!

It's always nice to be able to say hello to those who take the step out from lurking!!

Hopefully someone will be around who's had experiences of the OH being at BATUS.

Heather

Thanks for the nice welcome Heather!

I really hope someone on this board has been on a posting to Canada, as I have no idea what to expect. Am a bit nervous to be honest...

10 years with the Army and I'm still scared/nervous of the unknown! Silly really...

Hi!

I haven't been to BATUS but I'm pretty sure there is a really good HIVE type website on it, which gives a lot of detail about the accommodation and job prospects and so on. I was looking at it to see if there were any civil service jobs out there, I would love to go!!

From what I gathered it is a bit in the sticks, but I also get the impression that, outside of the cities, that's true of pretty mcuh everywhere in Canada - you're definitely in Big Country is what I've heard from friends who live there. I did work with someone who had been posted there and they loved it - they bought a house near one of the ski resorts as a retirement plan, they liked it so much. I think it really depends what you look for in a posting - I suspect it's the type of place where it really hinges on your attitude towards it, rather than what it has to offer. That's quite vague and unhelpful, and I hope someone who has been there will see your post. But seriously look it up online - the website I found had masses of information, guidance and pictures. Good luck! (I'm green with envy, so I hope it works out for you :-D )

Dinky xx

Thanks for your message Dinky!

I have checked out the HIVE website as well as the British Forces BATUS website - I just thought it'd be good to hear from people who have been in the same situation.

Sounds like your collegue loved it though. I guess you're right when you say it has a lot to do with your attitude; I suppose that's true of any posting really. We've been in Germany for the past six years and that certainly took some getting used to ;-)

Now I'll just have to mentally prepare myself for the joy of packing again...moving just never gets any easier, does it??

Thanks again

Sharonx
