Hiya All.

I started to trace my family tree 3 yrs ago.
It all started when i went to visit my grandmothers grave,i couldnt remember exactly where it was as i was last there many yrs ago,so i asked one of the staff iff they could help.

I gave names and d.o.d as much as i could remember and i was then shown where they were buried.
What i found strange was my grandmother and gr gran had the same surname.
So due to a lot of digging on my behalf i discovered that my grandmother had never married.
I also discovered that my mum and my 2 uncles all had different fathers.
On each of the birth certs there was no mention of a marraige and father unknown on them all.
hhhmmmm no wonder whenever i asked my mum about my grandfather she used to tell me to stop being so nosey.

When i sent off for a copy of my grandmothers birth cert i not only discovered that she to had no father and there was no marraige for her parents,i also discovered that the person who she is buried with and was know by so many family and friends as her mother was in fact not her mother.

It has been so complicated that i have given up.
I havent spoken to my mum in 10 yrs due to an arguement.
My family have also told me to leave the past where it is as they didnt want people being upset?

It,s a shame in a way as i would have loved to have had a family tree that i could display.
also my first grandchild was born this year so it would have been nice for her too.

I may take it up again when my head clears i think, but i just didnt realise how many lies and stories that had been told to cover up umwanted pregnancies.

thanks for reading in advance.#love

hi porcia

what a sad and complicated story

my grandmother never knew father but her mother said she was married on the birth cert but have never found the marriage and could well have lied
but have found
a maybe but i will never be sure unless i met some knew him or off him

some time it good to have a break and you can come back and find new records on line

have you check the parish records at the record office cos some time the vicar would put down the father and there are bastard bonds which tell you name of father and will might help

sorry that it has upset you it

hiya karen

thank you i never knew these bonds existed.

When one of my uncles got married my grandmother put down on the marraige cert that his father was --blah blah-- but it turned out that he wasn,t the father he was the grandfather?
there has been so much covering up.
and there was me thinking that in certain time era,s illegitimate children would have been frowned upon,it seems it was rife in my family.

It gets frustrating as when u think you have come somewhere u hit a brick wall ans no matter how long you sit there and think you just canot get it.
Even one of the registras that i sked for help from in the acrchive centre ws just as baffled as me.

Iv used lots of diferrent sites and had help from them too.
it,s just a shame that my family decided to plaster over the cracks to much.
as far as im concerned i dont care what they have got up to they are still my family.
thanks for reading karen.
love
