Hi, its been a long time since iv entered any kind of post so apologies if in wrong place.

I'm looking to change my life and return to work after 4 years out of paid work ( become a mum and never worked so hard etc etc).

I was under the impression that the gov would help returning mums with updating skills etc. However someone i met said this was generally only the case if i was a single parent (not case) or of a low income (not either). Is there anywhere online i can find out about the options available to myself. Or anyone can share their experience on how they did it.

I am keen to explore the possibility of volunteering if anyone has any help/ advice on this matter.

Thanks x

Hi Tolly and welcome to the board. Maybe start here
http://careersadvice.direct.gov.uk/helpandadvice/returningtowork/
http://careersadvice.direct.gov.uk/helpwithyourcareer/skills/
http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Employment/Jobseekers/JobsAndCareers/DG_10033053

This may be enough for a start. I know that some of our posters have actually done voluntary work so maybe they will have a few real pointers for you.

Hi,

I don't know about udating skills and stuff like that but a look at your local council website might be useful - there are usually links to various agencies that might be of use. Libraries often do courses too - generally IT and stuff like that, you never know.

This is a good site to look for volunteering opportunities, there are all manner of things you can do - http://www.do-it.org.uk/ I volunteer at a charity shop and it is a good way of getting some work experience and it's good fun.
