Hi Antonia,
I work as an accountant for local government and have a 2 year old daughter who is in nursery 3 days a week and her dad works part time and looks after her at home for 2 days a week. They are currently doing a flexible working study to look at who could work from home / flexibly and cost out options. From home I would be able to access the ledger, email and shared drives so that I would have the same access as I have in work. It has been established that my post would be compatible with the flexible home / hot desking option.
They have defined it into three as solely offsite / fixed desk / hot desking. Apparently it will be voluntary to work from home.
Whilst welcoming the option to work at home I'm a little sceptical as I've no experience of this and don't really know the pros and cons associated. Obviously the consulatants are very positive as if the survey comes out as viable they will land a big contract to implement this from my employer.
I can see the pros as being flexibility, no travelling / parking / travel time, comfort of home, less sickness leave etc.
For the cons I can see increased elec, heating costs, distractions, space, accountability.
Is there anything else that you could suggest that I may need to consider about working from home ? Every person would have a home visit and risk assessment undertaken and will be provided with desk, chair, computer etc and wireless connectivity to the internet at business speed.
When the weather is grotty or infact lovely then I often think I wish I could work from home but I would hate to agree to this method of working only to find it doesn't benefit me due to something I've failed to consider.
Sorry for the long disjointed post but I have lots of things rattling round in my head.
If you've got this far thank you for reading and I look forward to your response.
Thank you
Kaz x
